| NABU-PAL-UZUR. Nabupaluzur.
A
great Assyrian general who defeated the revolted Babylonians for his
master Bel-zikir-iskun, by whom he was made vice-king of Babylon. On
the accession of Assur-ebil-ili to the throne of Assyria, he and his son
Nabu-kudur-uzur conspired with Necho, king of Egypt, and made war with the
king of Assyria, whom he defeated in his own capital city of Nineveh, and
thus terminated the Assyrian empire. Shortly afterwards he
quarrelled with Pharaoh Necho, and sent his son against him, who
completely routed the Egyptians. He was succeeded by his son
Nabu-kudur-uzur, the Nebuchadnezzar of Hebrew history. Nabu-pal-uzur
married the Saite princess Neitaker, and was the Nabopalassar of the Greek
writers. (An Archaic
Dictionary, Cooper, 1876). The name means "Nebo protects (my) son," from the roots
Nabu,
"Nebo," pal, "son," and nazar, "to protect."
See Nabopalassar.
