NAOS. A
Scottish form of Irish Nessa
(q.v.), probably meaning "a nymph." Son of Usnach, and lover of Deirdre.
Also spelled Naoise, which
see.
The name
Naise is evidently an Irish importation. We have already seen that
Nessa was father of Conor, king of Ireland, who flourished before the
Christian era. In the Scottish episode of Deirdri, his name is
variously spelled, Naise, Snaois, Naois, Nais, Naos, and Nathos. (Macpherson
traces his pedigree to Usnoth, lord of Eta, by Slissima, the daughter of
Semo, and sister to the celebrated Cuchullin.) (Memorials of
Argyleshire, Brown, 1889).
