NASATYA. In Zendic mythology,
a set of twins, the fourth of
the Darvands, possibly meaning "the savers." The other five Darvands are: Akomano,
Ander, Saurva,
Taric, and
Zaric.
... Many scholars follow
Bergaigne in imagining all these miracles to be anthropomorphized forms of
solar phenomena, the healing of the blind representing the bringing out of
the sun from darkness, etc. To us such interpretation often seems
fatuous. No less unconvincing is the claim that one of the Acvins
represents the fire of heaven and the other the fire of the altar.
The Twins are called nāsatyā, the "savers" (or "not
untrue ones");2 explained by some as meaning "gods
with good noses."3
2 Perhaps best with Brunnhofer, "the
savers" from nas as in nasjan (AG. p. 99).
3 La Religion Védique, ii. p. 434.
That näsatya means "with good noses" is an epic
notion, nāsatyadasrāu sunasāu,
Mbhā, i. 3, 58, and for this reason, if for no other (though idea is
older), the etymology is probably false! The epithet is also
Iranian. Twinned and especially paired gods are characteristic of
the Rig Veda. Thus Vama and Yami are twins; and of pairs Indra-Agni,
Indra-Vayu, besides the older Mitra-Varuna, Heaven-Earth, are common.

Religions of India, Hopkins, 1895).
