NEBUCHADNEZZAR (נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּר).
Biblical.
Hebrew. Also
Nebuchadrezzar (נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּר),
and Gk. Nabuchodonosor
(Ναβουχοδονόσορ),
from Babylonian Nabu-kudurri-uzur,
possibly meaning "O
Nebo, protect my crown," but see below. This was the name of the
greatest and most powerful of the Babylonian kings. (Catholic
Encyclopedia, v.10, 1913).
NEBUCHADNEZZAR I. Or
Nebuchadrezzar. Or Nabu-kudur-uzur.
(Incorrectly written Nebuchadnezzar; in Assyrian, Nabiu-cudurri-yutsur,
"Nebo creates Submission," or "Nebo defend the
Landmark.") An early king of Babylon who reigned about B.C.
1150. He twice invaded Assyria in the reign of Assur-risilim, by
whom he was defeated, his plunder recovered, and his standard
captured. Nothing else is known respecting him. (An Archaic
Dictionary, Cooper, 1876)
