| NECHO. Necho
I., the chief of the petty kings of Egypt under the Icosarchy.
He was ruler of Memphis or Sais, and was a tributary of the Assyrians, who
at last raised him to the viceroyalty of Egypt as a means of subduing
Tirhakah, king of Ethiopia, who was continually instigating the natives to
revolt. He governed at Sais for some years, and was succeeded by his
son Psametik, or Psammetichus. Necho II., a king of Egypt in
the XXVIth dynasty. He was the son of Psametik I., and the princess
Shap-en-ap. His first work was the continuation of the war with
Palestine which had been begun by his father. On his progress he was
stopped at Megiddo by Josiah, king of Judah, whom he defeated and slew,
and setting up his son Jehoahaz in his stead, imposed a heavy tribute on
the land; but he was himself met at Carchemish by Nebuchadnezzar, king of
Babylon, at that time the master of Assyria, by whom he was utterly
routed, and driven back into Egypt with the loss of all his Asiatic
possessions. He was the last king of Egypt who came into conflict
with the Jews. Confining his attention to Egypt for the rest of his
reign, he attempted to dig a canal from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea,
a work in which 120,000 labourers perished. He further reopened the
old canal from the Nile to the Red Sea, and gave great impetus to
commerce, and attention to maritime affairs generally. The
circumnavigation of Africa was first accomplished in his reign, which
lasted sixteen years, when he was succeeded by his son Psametik II.
The monuments of the reign of Necho II. are remarkable for an affectation
of naturalism in the delineation of the human figure, and for a want of
accuracy in the Hieroglyphic texts. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
