| NIGELLUS.
A Norman French diminutive form of Roman Niger
(q.v.), meaning "the black."
(History of
Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
NIGELLUS.
A Latinized form of
Old Norse Njáll
(q.v.), meaning "champion."

Nesle or Nêle. Chroniclers Latinized it as Nigellus, supposing
