NANE.  Unisex.  The Egyptian form of biblical Nun, meaning "a fish." (Christian Topography of Cosmas, an Egyptian Monk, McCrindle, 1897).  But the Egyptian form is more likely to be from Coptic nane, a feminine word meaning "good, beautiful."  Nane (also spelled nanu) is the same word from which our English word "nun" was derived.  See Nanu (q.v.).
