OANNES.  An Assyrian deity, half man and half fish, who according to the Greek mythologists, floated on the waters of chaos.  He was called the "Lord of the Lower World," and "Lord of Darkness," and was probably analogous to the Dagon of the Phoenicians. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
