OLEK (Олек).  A Ukrainian form of Alex (q.v.); it is short for Oleksander (q.v.), meaning "defender of man."

OLEK (الغ).  A variant form of Tartarian Ulugh (q.v.), meaning "great."

Ulugh-Begh, or Olek Bek (d. 1449), Tatar prince; was put to death by his son after a long reign.  He left works on astronomy, geography, and chronology. (Cassell's New Biographical Dictionary, 1896)
