ONI. African
Yoruba. Either from ọni, "a crocodile," or oni,
"this day, today." (Grammar
and Dictionary of the Yoruba Language, Bowen, 1858).
After the
repulse of the Dahomian army in their attack upon Abbeokuta last year
(1851), some of the prisoners were made presents to Oni, the chief of
Ife, to Alaketu, the chief of Ketu, and to the king of Yoruba, to show
what they had been enabled to do through their connexion with England,
through the return of the liberated Africans to Abbeokuta, and the
residence of Missionaries among them... (A Grammar of the Yoruba
Language, Crowther, 1852)
