ORESTIS (Ώρέστης).  Greek myth name of the son of Agamemnon and Clytaemnestra, who avenged his father's murder by his mother.  Afterwards, seized with madness, he fled the land pursued by the Furies.  Latin Orestes.  The etymology of the name is not known, but cf. Horus (the sun), and especially Gnostic Horos (Ὡρος), "the Limiter."  The name may signify one who is heated and distant.
