ORSO. An
Italian
form of Latin Ursus
(q.v.), meaning "bear." Also see Orsino.
(History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
... In the East, church-bells were
of later introduction. No mention of them in the East appears to
occur until Orso, duke of Venice, towards the end of the 9th
century, gave twelve large bells of brass to Michael (or Basil) the
Greek emperor, who added a bell-tower to the church of St. Sophia at
Constantinople for their reception. (A Dictionary of Christian
Antiquities, Cheetham, 1875)
