OSAMA (أسامة).  Arabic name, said to mean "lion-like."  The Arabic word for lion is asad. (An English and Arabic Dictionary, Catafago, 1873).  Also spelled Usama.

    Osama Ibn Munkid, member of the tribe of Kinana which descends from that of Kalb, native of Shaizar.  Surnamed Muwaiyad ad-Dawlat Majd ad-din (strengthened in empire, glory of religion).  Osama was one of the most learned and intrepid members of the Munkid family, lords of the castle of Shaizar.  He composed a number of works on different branches of general literature, and is highly spoken of by Ibn al-Mastawfi in his history of Arbela,... He died at Damascus in November A.D. 1188... (Ibn Khallikan's Biographical Dictionary, v.1, 1843)
