name, said to mean "lion-like." The Arabic word for lion

Osama
Ibn Munkid, member of the tribe of Kinana which descends from that of
Kalb, native of Shaizar. Surnamed Muwaiyad ad-Dawlat Majd ad-din (strengthened
in empire, glory of religion). Osama was one of the most
learned and intrepid members of the Munkid family, lords of the castle
of Shaizar. He composed a number of works on different branches of
general literature, and is highly spoken of by Ibn al-Mastawfi in his
history of Arbela,... He died at Damascus in November A.D. 1188... (Ibn
