OSBEORN. Anglo-Saxon
name meaning "divine bear," from Old English os "god, rune,"
and beorn "bear." It is the same as Old Norse Aasbiorn
(q.v.). (A
Handy Dictionary of Anglo-Saxon Poetry Based on Groschopp's Grein,
Harrison-Baskervill, 1886).
... The bravest of the Saxons fled
before this military occupation, and took refuge in Scotland and
Ireland, where they were well received. They sent from there an
appeal for aid to their ancient foes the Scandinavians. Osbeorn,
brother of the King of Denmark, landed at the mouth of the Humber, in
the midst of provinces occupied by the ancient Danish population
(1069). The Saxons rushed to his standard with their prince,
Eadgar, and the other exiles, the untiring friends of liberty, at their
head. But Osbeorn was bought over by the rich offers made
him by William, and left the country, to be outlawed by his brother for
his treachery... (The History of the Middle Ages, Duruy-Whitney,
1891)
