OSBORN. English.
From Anglo-Saxon Osbeorn
(q.v.), meaning "divine bear."
... An Osborn was the seneschal who was murdered in
the sleeping chamber of William in the stormy days of the minority of the
future conqueror; and his son, William Fitzosborn, was the chief friend
and confidant of the stern victor of Hastings. Osborn figures in
Domesday, and has become a common English surname, which used to be
translated either Ouse-burn, "dwelling near the Ouse river" or
"house-born" before comparison with the other tongues had shown
the true relations of the word. (History of Christian Names,
Yonge, 1884).
