OSGOD.  Anglo-Saxon name meaning "rune-god," from Old English os "god, rune," and god "god."  It is the same as Old Norse Asgautr. (A Handy Dictionary of Anglo-Saxon Poetry Based on Groschopp's Grein, Harrison-Baskervill, 1886)

The year of Ealdred's mission was marked also by the sudden death of a somewhat remarkable person, namely Osgod Clapa, whose movements by sea had been watched with such care five years before.  The Chronicler remarks, seemingly with some little astonishment, that he died in his bed...
