OSMAN (عثمان).  A variant form of Arabic Othman (q.v.), meaning "baby bustard," a crane-like game bird.

    Osman or Othman II, Sultan of Turkey, born in 1604, was the eldest son of Ahmed I.  He began to reign in 1618, and was assassinated in 1622. (Universal Pronouncing Dictionary of Biography and Mythology, Thomas, v.2, 1915)
