OSWINE.  Anglo-Saxon name meaning "divine friend," from Old English os, "divinity, god, rune," and wine "beloved, friend." (A Handy Dictionary of Anglo-Saxon Poetry Based on Groschopp's Grein, Harrison-Baskervill, 1886).  Baring-Gould renders the name "the friend of the Ancestral deity."  Os is another form of As which is the singular form of Æsir (the gods). (Family Names and Their Story, Baring-Gould, 1910).
