OUAPHRIS (Οὐάφρις). Manetho's
Greek form of Hebrew Hophra
("of the sun"), from Egyptian Uahprahet
("the sun enlarges his heart"). (The American
Cyclopaedia, Ripley-Dana, v.1, 1883; Cyclopaedia of Biblical,
Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature, McClintock, v.4, 1894).
Pharaoh-hophra
(the Uahbra
of the Egyptian monuments, the Ouaphris of Manetho, and the Apries
of Herodotus) was the fourth king of the twenty-sixth dynasty. He
reigned nineteen years, from B.C. 589 to 570. He was a warrior,
and appears to have conquered the combined fleets of Cyprus and of Sidon
in a sea fight. He failed at last in an attack on the Greek colony
of Cyrene. His army, in consequence, revolted; he was captured,
confined, and ultimately put to death. (The Sunday School Teacher's
Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894).
