    In the New Testament, a woman who had been a "servant" or "deaconess" of the Church at Cenchrea, the eastern port of Corinth, but removed temporarily or permanently to Rome.  The Apostle Paul warmly commended her to the care and attention of the Christians there (Rom. xvi. 1, 2).
