In the Grand St. Graal we read not of Peleur, but Pellean, said to have been called the Maimed King on account of his having been "wounded in the two thighs in a battle of Rome."  The other king in the same context is called Pelles; but he is there made a descendant of Pellean, and not brother to him.  In the Huth manuscript of the Merlin,... Pellean reads Pellehan, king of Listinois, which after Balyn's dolorous stroke was known as the Terre Gastee and the Terre Foraine.  This romance calls Pellehan's demon brother Garlan or Gallan, who appears as Garlon in Malory's narrative, where the good brother, who trying to avenge Garlon's death is wounded by Balyn, is called Pellam.  The other good brother, Pelles, has,... to be sought here under the names Pelles and Pelleas, though the latter can only be a modification of the French nominative Pelleans, of the name Pellean of the Maimed King, of which Malory makes Pellam; nor is this the whole of the confusion in Malory's pages, for he treats Pellam and Pelleas as in no way related to one another, while he confuses Pelles and Pellam.  But all this, and a good deal more, may be regarded as the result of his having compiled from different sources.
