PHILIPPOS (Φίλιππος). Greek
name composed of the elements phil "friendship, love" and
hippos "horse," hence "fond of horses." (Yonge)
... The physicians were quite
baffled. One alone, an Akarnanian named Philippos,
undertook to give the king a medicine which would certainly cure
him. Meanwhile a letter reached Alexander from Parmenion, warning
him to beware of Philippos; as a rumour was abroad that he had
