| PTOLEMY PHILOPATER. Ptolemy
(IV.) Philopater, "Father Loving." The son of Ptolemy
Euergetes, whom he succeeded, B.C. 222, and owing to the wisdom of his
predecessors, found himself at the head of the greatest naval power in the
world, and an empire extending from Ethiopia to Upper Syria, and including
Cyrene, the cities of the coast of Asia Minor, and Ænos and Maronea in
Thrace. By the advice of his chief minister, Sosibius, he commenced
his reign by putting to death his mother Berenice, and his brother Magus,
and then soon gave himself up to pleasures and excesses. The kingdom
falling into decay, Philopater was roused into action by Antiochus the
Great, who had obtained Seleucia by the treachery of the Egyptian
garrison, and had become master of Syria and Palestine before Ptolemy was
able to bring his army into the field. In the battles which ensued
between the two monarchs, the king of Egypt was defeated at many places
and finally at Raphia, B.C. 217, and thus lost the whole of his Asiatic
dominions. He still continued, however, to follow the dictates of an
imperious voluptuousness, and marked his want of policy by a specious
attention to literature and art, more especially the arts of music and
poetry. He died, worn out with disease, in the seventeenth year of
his reign, B.C. 205, leaving the empire of the Ptolemies weakened by
misrule and over taxation, and attacked both by the Syrians and Easterns. (An Archaic
Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
