PALLAS.
f. Latin. From pallax, meaning "a
maiden."
"Pallas" (Minerva),
from pallax, a maiden (Hemsterhuis). (Etymological and
Pronouncing Dictionary of Difficult Words, Brewer, 1882).
PALLAS (Παλλάς). m.
Greek
name meaning "brandisher; spear vibrator." In mythology,
the grandfather of Evander.
PALLAS: brandisher, spear vibrator, con. Ballo:
I throw. Palladium: an aerolite, said to be statue of Pallas
fallen from heaven, upon which Trojan safely depended. Trial by
jury is the palladium of British liberty. Luke says,
"Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not how that the
city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana and of the (aerolite)
which fell down from heaven." This aerolite was the pedestal
of Artemis. To this hour there is one served in the Medjid
(Temple) at Mecca, called Kaaba, which the Arabs say was white when it
was the footstool of God at the time He visited Adam in Paradise, but
turned black when he sinned. Thousands of hadjis will kiss it this
year. (Personal and
Family Names, Long, 1883).
