RADEGONDA. Spanish
Gothic. The same as French Radegonde
(q.v.), meaning "war
council." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
... A royal residence or Villa
Regia existed, before the time of Erchenwald, in the neighbourhood of
Péronne, and was occasionally occupied by Clothair I. It is
mentioned by Fortunatus in his life of Radegonda. He tells us,
"Radegonda was only eleven years old, when, in the year 530, she
witnessed the tragic scene in which her father Bertarius, King of
Thuringia was robbed of his crown and his life by Ermenfrid." (Three
Months in the Forests of France, Stokes, 1895).
