RÂ. Also spelled Rê
(q.v.). "To Make, to Dispose." In Egyptian
mythology the deity of the mid-day sun, of which the other deities were
more or less manifestations. Ra was adored all over Egypt, but
chiefly at Heliopolis as the most striking manifestation of the Supreme
Being, and the organiser of the world, of which the material fabric had
been made by Pthah. He was represented as a man with the head of a
sparrow hawk, and holding the usual cucufa staff and cross of
life. Although a benevolent deity, in anger at the sins of men, he
once, assisted by Tefnut, destroyed the entire human race, which he
afterwards revived afresh out of the blood of the slain, at the
intercession of Nu and the other deities. The name Ra is also
written with the article, Phre. See also Horus.
Ra, a royal scribe, and superintendent of the granaries of the
North and South. Period uncertain. Ra, a scribe of
the offerings of an unknown deity. The period when he lived is
uncertain, but his monument is in the Leyden Museum. (An Archaic
Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
