contracted
form of Anglo-Saxon Randulf
(q.v.), from old German Randwulf
(q.v.), meaning "shield wolf." (History of Christian Names,
Yonge, 1884).
Raulf, grandson of
Ethelred (being the son of his daughter Goda, by Walter de Mantes); in
1041 made Earl of the Magesetan (Flor. Wigorn.—Hoveden); he was
afterwards banished. In 1051 he was restored to his Earldom by the
Confessor. (The Rise and Progress of the English Commonwealth,
