RHYENCE. Arthurian.
A giant who trimmed his robe with the beards of eleven
kings, and wanted to make Arthur's beard the twelfth. The name probably
means
"warrior," from Welsh rhys. Also called Rience,
Rion, and Ryence.
Sir Gawaine was the hero of the
battle with the giant Rhyence: "That Gawain with his olde
curtesie." Chaucer, The Squire's Tale. (A Dictionary of English
and Welsh Surnames, Bardsley, 1901)

complete the trimming, with what consequences no one acquainted with
King Arthur can doubt.

They connect themselves closely with the universal words for ruler, the
Gadhaelic righ, Teuton rik, Latin rex, and the rajah

of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
