Italian and Spanish. The same as French Rodrigue,
from Teutonic Hruoderich (q.v.), meaning "famous
ruler." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
Toledo, de, (Rodrigo,)
[Lat. Rodericus Toletanus,] a distinguished prelate and historian, born
in Navarre about 1170, was originally named Rodrigo Ximenes.
He became Bishop of Siguenza in 1192, and subsequently Archbishop of
Toledo. He was the author of a History of Spain, ("Rerum in
Hispania Gestarum Chronicon," 1545,) and History of the Western
Arabs, ("Historia Arabum," 1603,) both of which are highly
