ROOSEVELT.
Dutch name meaning "field of roses," from roose "roses" and velt
"field, open country."
Roosevelt
(Rose-a-velt). The original family bore the name Van Roosevelt,
translating "of the field of roses," descriptive of their
estates in Holland. Claes Martenszen Van Rosenvelt, born August,
1649, emigrated to New Amsterdam (New York). His son (1653) and
all of his descendants dropped the Dutch title, Van. (Handbook of United
States Political History for Readers and Students, 1910).
