| RUT-AMEN. A
king of Egypt of the XXVth dynasty, and the successor of Tirhakah I.
He was the son of Shabaka, and revolted against Assurbanipal, king of
Assyria, whose vassal he was, and with the assistance of the king of Tyre,
he defeated the Assyrians at Memphis. This brought the king of
Assyria to the rescue, who first blockading Tyre led his army through
Samaria into Egypt, and gave battle to and defeated Rut-amen at
Memphis, which city he pillaged and destroyed. Rut-amen fled
to a city named by the Assyrians Kip-kipi, and died after a reign of
twelve years. He was called Urdamani
by the Assyrians. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
