SUCCOTH-BENOTH (סֻכּוֹת בְּנוֹת).
Biblical. Hebrew name meaning "booths of daughters."
SUCCOTH-BENOTH. The name
by which the Assyrian goddess Zirrat Banit is mentioned in Hebrew
history. (An Archaic
Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
SUCCOTH-BENOTH. [Hebrew = "booths of daughters." See the article.]
As adopted
into the Hebrew this means "booths of daughters," but it seems
to have come originally from the Assyrian Zirat-Banit,
the name of the Assyrian and Babylonian "god," Merodach's
wife. Idols of her were made by the Babylonians brought to Samaria
to fill the places of the Israelites carried into captivity (2 Kings
xvii. 30). (The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter,
1894)
