| SABAS. Spanish.
Probably from the Arabic Saba
(q.v.), meaning "wine imbiber."
SABAS. Greek
form of Aramaic Saba
(q.v.), meaning "the aged man." Saint
Sabas was a Cappadocian monk and priest who lived mainly in Palestine, and
founded several monasteries.
When St.
Sabas was at Jerusalem, there was a great dearth. No water could
be found even to drink, so that the people were ready to perish.
St. Sabas prayed, and the rain fell so abundantly that the cisterns were
filled, and all the people had an ample supply—Cyril (the monk), Life
of St. Sabas. (A Dictionary of Miracles, Brewer, 1901)
