SAMIR (سمير).  Arabic name, derived from the vocabulary word sámir, or sameer, the highest title of the Grand Vizier, applied to him by the Sultan as his confidential friend and sharer of his anxious "night thoughts" for the safety of the Empire. (An Arabic-English Vocabulary for the Use of English Students &c., Cameron, 1892).  Also spelled Sameer.  And see the feminines Samar, Samira, and Samirah.
