... His name at my request, he
wrote in my pocket-book. First he wrote "Samuel" in
French characters, and then began "watch-maker" in German—"Uhr..."—but
I checked him, and told him to write it in Russian. Thereupon he
wrote "Samoilo. Watchmaker. Vorontsovsky
Street. Own House. Kertch." (The Region of the
