SAMSI-VUL. Samsi-vul
I., or Samas-Rimmon. The son of Ismi-Dagan, king of
Assyria. He reigned about B.C. 1800 to 1820, and buit temples at
Assur to the deities Anu and Vul. These were restored seven hundred
years later by Tiglath Pileser I.
Samsi-vul II., an early king of Assyria, B.C.
1800. He was the son of Igur-kap-kapu, but nothing is known
concerning him except that he founded the great national temple of Assur.
Samsi-vul III., an early king of Assyria, about
B.C. 1080 to 1060. He was the son of Tiglath Pileser I., and the
brother and successor of Assur-bel-kala, king of Assyria. He
restored the temple of the goddess of Nineveh, and nothing else is known
respecting him. After his reign for a century and a half the power
of the Assyrian empire was very small, and the very names of its
sovereigns are lost.
Samsi-vul IV., the younger son of Shalmaneser
II., king of Assyria. He ascended the throne B.C. 825. His
first work on ascending the throne was to consolidate the empire which had
been weakened by the revolt of his elder brother Assurdainpal. After
this he commenced a series of wars to reduce the provinces of the empire
to submission, in most of which he was successful. He then conquered
Media, and after a few years invaded Babylonia, defeating the king
Maruduk-balad-su-ikbi, and compelling him to sign a treaty ceding large
border provinces to Assyria. After this he returned to Nineveh,
where he erected an obelisk to the deity Ishtar, and another to the god
Nebo in the city of Calah. He does not appear to have erected any
great works, but to have been solely a warrior. He died after a
reign of thirteen years, and left his throne to his son Vulnirari III., at
that time a mere boy.
