SANI. A
Native
American Navajo name meaning "the old one."
... Some old Navajo
silversmiths assert that the art of working silver was introduced from
Mexico about sixty years ago, toward the middle of the last
century. About this time a Mexican silversmith named Cassilio came
to the Navajo country and taught his art to a Navajo blacksmith called
by his people Atsidi Sani, or the "Old Smith." Cassilio
is said to have been still living about 1872... (Rings
for the Finger, Kunz, 1917).
ŚANI (शनि). Hindu
name for the planet Saturn, literally meaning "slow." In mythology,
this is the name of a son of Surya.
"Saturn: sanaistschara,
from sanais, slow, and tschara, going; also sauri, a name of Vishnu
(derived as a patronymic from sûra, Grandfather of Kri,) and sani.
The planet name sani-vârafor 'dies Saturni,' is radically related to
the adverb sanais, slow. (Cosmos, Humboldt, 1901)
... The story goes that when
Ganesha, the son of Siva and his wife Parbutti, was born, the gods came
to see the child, and all admired him but Sani—the Indian
Saturn—who was afraid to do so, lest some evil influence, proceeding
from him, might injure the child... (The Gospel in All Lands, January
1890.)
