SARDANAPALUS.  Roman form of Greek Sardanapalos (q.v.), meaning "the heart protector."  It is the Greek translation of Assyrian Assurbanipal (q.v.), who was a co-regent of Assyria with his father Esarhaddon.  His Babylonian name was Nabopalassar (q.v.). (An Essay on Assyriology, Evans, 1883).  Also see the note under Acraganes. (History of Assurbanipal, Smith, 1900).

    Sardanapalus I.  A name at one period applied by early Assyriologists to Assur-nazir-pal, which see.
    Sardanapalus II., a name applied by the Greek writers to both Assurbanipal, the son of Esarhaddon, and to his own son Assur-ebil-ili, who burnt himself to death in the palace at the fall of Nineveh.
    Sardanapalus III., the name given by some Assyriologists to the king who is generally called Assuracus, which see. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
