| SARGINA. Or
Sargon I. An
early, almost mythical Babylonian king, about the sixteenth century
B.C. He was a bastard, born at the city of Azupirani, and was
exposed by his mother, probably at the command of his uncle, in a basket
on the river Euphrates. Here he was found by a husbandman named Akki,
who took care of him and taught him agriculture. After some years
Sargina became the head of a race of wild or dark people, probably
outlaws, by the help of whom he seized the throne of Babylonia, and
founded the city of Dur-Sargina. He built a great temple at Agane,
and a palace named Ekiam-izillik, which he established as the capital of
his empire, and where he founded a library, for which the great
astronomical cyclopaedia, the Namar-bili, was compiled. He fought
with great success against the Elamites and Syrians. After that he
was besieged in his own capital by the Kassi, or men of all countries,
whom he ultimately defeated. The events of the rest of his reign are
unknown. He was succeeded by his son Naramsin.

Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
