Origin of the name SAUL.
Etymology of the name SAUL.
Meaning of the baby name SAUL.

SAUL.  Biblical.  [Heb. Shaul = "asked for," "demanded," "desired"].

     (1) A king of Edom, from Rehoboth, on the Euphrates (Gen. xxxvi. 37, 38).
     (2) The first king of Israel.  When the prophet Samuel was becoming advanced in years, and there was a danger that he might be succeeded by his unworthy sons, whom he had already made judges, the people clamoured for a king, and God granted them their desire (1 Sam. xiii. 1-22)... The oridnary Hebrew chronology assigns to Saul a reign of thirty-nine years (B.C. 1095-1056), and Josephus forty years; but the R.V. considers the proper rendering of 1 Sam. xiii. 1 to be "Saul was [thirty] years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years over Israel."  This would be B.C. 1058 to 1056.
     (3) The original name of St. Paul (Acts vii. 58; xiii. 9). (The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894)
