| SETI-NEKHT. "Set
in his Strength." An Egyptian prince, and the founder of the
XXth Egyptian dynasty. He arose into importance during the
revolution caused by the invasion of Arsu,
the Syrian, which led to the destruction of the established religion for
the third time (See Apepi
and Taia),
and caused the different great lords of the provinces to arrogate the
crown to themselves in their own districts, after the death of Merenpthah
I. These Syrians and their leader, Arsu, the Osarsiph of Josephus,
Set-Nekht expelled, and gradually subdued or pacified the revolted chiefs
of Egypt, whereupon the priests appear to have placed him on the throne as
the restorer of order and religion. Having effected this great
result he died after a short reign, and left the throne to his son and
associate Rameses III. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
