Armenian name meaning "overprince; prince of princes." (The
Life and Times of S. Gregory the Illuminator, Malan, 1868)
... Ashod, surnamed the Great,
obliged the Caliph Motovakkel to acknowledge him independent governor of
Armenia, with the title of "Prince of Princes" (A.D. 859,
which as afterwards changed by the Caliph Maatmed into the full title of
"King" (A.D. 885). Thus was founded the Third Dynasty of
native Armenian kings, some of whom reigned under the pompous title of
"Shahan-shah," that is, "Prince over Princes." (Ibid.,
