SHEMESH (שֶׁמֶשׁ). Phoenician
name meaning "the sun."
... That Shamas,
or Shemesh, "the sun," was worshipped separately from
Baal has been already mentioned. In Assyria and Babylonia he was
one of the foremost deities; and his cult among the Phoenicians is
witnessed by such a name as Abed-Shemesh
(q.v.), which is found in two of the native inscriptions... (The Religions
of the Ancient World, Rawlinson, 1885).
SHEMESH. Or SHAMASH.
In Babylonian mythology the son of Ningal, and the god of the sun.
He was called the "Judge of Heaven and Earth," "Director
of All," and "Lord of the Cities of Larsa and Sippara."
His consort and sister was the goddess Ishtar, the daughter of Sin, who
must not be confounded with Ishtar, the daughter of Anu. His
analogue was the Shemesh or Shems
of the Syrian religions. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
