Anglo-Saxon. The same as Sigeweard
(q.v.), meaning "conquering guard." Also spelled Sigward.
This writing
witnesseth that Æðelsige of Wouldham hath borrowed for the life of
Bishop Sigeward, his daughter and her daughter out of Tottles kin, and
hath replaced them by other serfs, by witness of all the commonalty of
Rochester, and the bishop's comrades.—Cod. Dipl. No. 975. (The
