Meaning of the baby name SILENUS.

SILENUS.  Latin.  Greek Silenos.  A name from mythology.  He was a demi-god who was nurse and attendant of the god Bacchus.  Described as a satyr, or a fat and jovial old man riding on an ass, and always intoxicated.  But he may have been the original Old Father Christmas.  The name may mean "holy one."  See Bayley's note under Selena. (Archaic England, Bayley, 1920).
