SIMEON (Συμεών). Biblical.
[Heb.
Shimeon =
"hearing," "hearkening to" i.e. "obedient." (cf. Gen. xxix. 33)].
The French accent it Siméon, and have the feminine form Simonne.
(1) A
son of Jacob, the second one borne him by Leah (Gen. xxix. 33). In
conjunction with his brother, he made a savage massacre of the Hivite
inhabitants of Shechem on account of the injury done by one of their
number to Dinah (Gen. xxxiv. 24-31). When one of Jacob's sons was
to be kept a prisoner in Egypt as security for return of the rest,
Joseph "took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their
eyes" (xlii. 24): possibly, some years before, he may have been the
brother who, above all the rest, was eager for the murder of
Joseph. The prediction of Simeon's future by the dying Jacob
returns to the subject of the massacre, and threatens Simeon as well as
Levi that they will be scattered in Israel (xlix. 5-7).
(2) [Symeon (1)] (Luke iii. 30—A.V.).
(3) A "righteous and devout" man to
whom it had been revealed by the Holy Spirit that he should not see
death till he had seen the Lord's Christ (Anointed One). Coming
into the Temple when Joseph and Mary had just brought in the infant
Jesus, Simeon recognised Him as the promised Messiah, expressed his
willingness now to depart in peace, and made a prophetic address to Mary
with respect both to her and her Child (Luke ii. 25-35).
(4) Simon Peter (Acts xv. 14—A.V.). [Symeon
(2).]
(5) [Symeon (3)] (Acts xiii. 1—A.V.). (The
Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894).
