| SIPTHAH. Or
pseudo-Menepthah
II. An usurping king of Egypt, in the XIXth dynasty. He was
probably the son of Amenmes, a prince of the royal family of Rameses
II. He ascended the throne in a period of popular confusion, and for
a time reigned jointly with Seti II., the legitimate heir of the previous
monarch, Merenpthah I. He afterwards married a daughter of
Merenpthah, the princess Tauser, and admitted her to the sovereignty,
through the influence of Bai the chancellor, whose power was acknowledged
over the country. The length of his reign is not known; and after
his death he was treated as an usurper, and his tomb opened, and its
sculptures defaced, and appropriated to himself by his successor,
Seti-nekht. Sipthah was called also Menepthah or Mer-en-pthah II.,
and must not be confounded with his predecessor, Seti Menepthah II. (An Archaic
Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
