SPIRIDION (Σπυρίδιον). A
Greek form of Italian Spiridione
(q.v.). Some authors, like Long, make this an occupational name for
a "basket maker," from σπυρίς (a
round basket). See Yonge's note under Spiridon.
Others, like Moody, make it a diminutive of Spiro
(q.v.), Latin spiritus, meaning "breath of the gods." (What
Is Your Name?, Moody, 1863).
Usage: Croatia, Greece, Illyria.
Spiridion Brusina (d. 1908), was a Croatian zoologist.
(Wiki)
... "They took up of the
broken meat that was left seven baskets (spuridas) full."
"The ides are at last come, Spurina." SPIRIDION
(Greek hermit) = SAUSSURE (Genevese savan): osier seller, basket maker.
(Personal and Family Names, Long, 1883).
