SPIRIDON (Σπυρίδων). Greek.
A diminutive form of Spiro
(q.v.), Latin spiritus, meaning "breath of the gods."
Some authors make it an occupational name for a "basket
maker." See Yonge's note below, and Long's note under Spiridion.
Usage: Croatia, Greece, Serbia.
Spiridon Belokas, a Greek
athlete. Spiridon Gopčević (d. 1928), was a Serbian astronomer and
historian. (Wiki)
... the old Cypriot shepherd
hermit Σπυρίδων
(Spiridon), from σπυρίς
(a round basket). He was
afterwards a bishop, and one of the fathers of Nicea, then going home,
died at a great age, asleep in his corn field... (History
of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
