STANISLAUS. A
German form of Slavic Stanislav
(q.v.), meaning "camp
glory." (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
De Sommières renders it "stands firm
for glory." See his note under Radimir.
Usage: England, Germany, Poland.
The Virgin and Child appear
to Stanislaus Kostka (sixteenth century). During sickness, and
towards the close of his life, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Stanislaus
Kostka. She had her Child in her arms, and regarded the sick man
with the sweetest graciousness. When she vanished, she placed the
Child on Kostka's bed, and left Him there. From this moment he
began to amend, at which the physicians marvelled; but he went on
gathering strength daily, till he was wholly convalescent. (A
Dictionary of Miracles, Brewer, 1901)
